What is yoga?

Yoga means Union - Union of Body, Mind & Spirit.

Yoga is mindfulness, meditation in movement. The main purpose of yoga is TRAINING THE MIND.
This is why many people, at the end of a yoga class (often to their surprise) describe a feeling of “lightness” as if a “weight has been lifted off their shoulders”.
Why? Because we have been training the thinking mind to come to the present moment again and again and again and again.
How do we train the mind in yoga? Through the body and the breath.
The body is just the vehicle, the breath is your anchor to the Now.
Yoga is NOT relaxation, relaxation is a by product of your yoga practice, regardless of the style.
Do you need to be spiritual to practice yoga or to feel the holistic benefits of yoga? The short answer is no. The same as you don’t need to be a monk to meditate.
The physical aspect of yoga is NOT just about flexibility. Yoga is as much about strength as it is about flexibility. You cannot move with control and awareness without strength. Yoga is NOT fitness but it will keep you fit.

What are the benefits of yoga?
More flexible and less achy body
Improved range of motion and balance
Clarity of thought
Better Breathing
Grounding feeling - feeling stable, rooted, balanced and secure.
Stronger body
More resilient mind
Better sleep
Enhanced mood

The list is long as we train both body and mind, they are interconnected and inseparable.
